Sensei Jay
Sensei Jay is the Chief Instructor of the Mississauga Academy of Martial Arts. His presence at the head of a class seems to bring out the best in his students, and his enthusiasm for learning is highly contagious. His pupils look to him for knowledge and guidance, with respect to both their martial training, and their lives. Sensei Ian Jay’s story begins on August 10th, 1970 in the small town of Sandy Point, Nova Scotia. After moving to Ontario, he began training at the Brampton Honbu Dojo under Shihan Cyr at the age of 18. Seeing his potential in the martial arts Shihan Cyr gave him the opportunity to begin his Apprenticeship.
Sensei Jay achieved his Shodan (First Degree Black Belt) in March of 1994, and under the continued teaching of Shihan Cyr , achieved his Nidan in September 1997, and his Sandan in June 2002. In addition to being a committed instructor, Sensei Jay remains a dedicated student.
Like his dojo, Sensei Jay’s family has also flourished. With his wife Michelle , manager, instructor and Sempai, he has two children who are regular participants at the Dojo both in class and out.
While Sensei Jay’s primary focus lies with the art of Goju Karate, he is also an experienced practitioner of Ju Jutsu, Tai Chi Chuan, Pa Kua, Kobudo and Defensive Tactics. He has traveled extensively to study these arts, to such places as Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Thailand.
Sensei Jay also makes an active contribution to the local community, sponsoring soccer teams, teaching school courses, and appearing at Scouts and Guides meetings. He incorporates into his children’s classes the importance of bully awareness, and the practice of proper etiquette at all times.
Sensei Jay has made a positive impact on countless people’s lives, and continues to do so through his positive attitude and martial teachings. He looks forward to many more successful years teaching the martial arts to any and all who care to listen.
