Our Founder
A teacher can only open the door. You are the one that must walk through it. Our founder Brian Cyr first walked through that same door in 1983. He became a student of Tenth Dan, O’Sensei Richard Kim. While training for nearly 20 years, Mr. Cyr was honoured with a Fourth Dan rank in Karate and Kobudo, along with a First Dan standing in Japanese Ju Jutsu.
Mr. Cyr’s training has taken him around the world. He has traveled from Canada through the United States, into Brazil, and to the birthplaces of many great traditional Martial Arts, such as Okinawa, Japan, Thailand, and the Shaolin Temple in Hunan, China. Perhaps most notable is his training in Okinawa, where Mr. Cyr was tested and promoted to the rank of Sixth Dan and presented with the senior teaching title: Shihan.
Mr. Cyr has gained a thorough understanding of the philosophical and psychological principles of the Martial Arts. He considers it an honour to pass this information along to new generations of Martial Artists. And because a good teacher must also be an avid student, Mr. Cyr has continued to complement his studies with modern self-defense systems.
With his wife Kim standing by his side, Mr. Cyr began his life-long commitment to Martial Arts in the Spring of 1988, when the first Academy of Martial Arts was founded. To this day, he still dedicates the majority of his time to training and teaching the way of life of the Martial Arts.
